How to Talk Naturally with Japanese Friends: Greetings and Topics

Learn respectful first greetings, forms of address, listening responses, conversation topics, and translation tips for talking with a Japanese friend.

Personalities and communication styles vary, so avoid assuming every Japanese person behaves the same way. Begin with light, polite language and gradually match the tone and pace your conversation partner prefers.

Useful first greetings

  • はじめまして (Hajimemashite) — Nice to meet you.
  • お話しできてうれしいです (Ohanashi dekite ureshii desu) — I’m glad we can talk.
  • 何と呼べばいいですか? (Nanto yobeba ii desu ka?) — What should I call you?
  • 日本語を勉強しています (Nihongo o benkyō shiteimasu) — I’m studying Japanese.
  • ゆっくり話してもらえますか? (Yukkuri hanashite moraemasu ka?) — Could you speak slowly?

Ask what they prefer to be called

Using the name they provide plus さん (san) is usually a respectful starting point. They may prefer a nickname or first name, so ask. Very casual speech or an intimate nickname can feel too familiar at the beginning.

Topics that flow naturally

  • Favorite foods and dishes you recommend to each other
  • A recent anime, film, series, or song
  • Seasons and weather where each of you lives
  • Places visited and future travel wishes
  • Why you began studying a language and what feels difficult

Short listening responses help

Expressions such as そうですね (sō desu ne, ‘that’s true’), なるほど (naruhodo, ‘I see’), and いいですね (ii desu ne, ‘that sounds good’) show that you are listening. Use them genuinely and avoid interrupting before the speaker finishes.

Topics to approach carefully at first

Avoid immediately asking about age, income, marriage plans, appearance, or political views. When discussing culture, ‘What is your experience?’ is more respectful than asking one person to explain why all Japanese people behave a certain way.

Tips when using translation

State the subject clearly and include the original spelling for names and places. A machine translation may sound blunt even when the writer did not intend rudeness, so clarify before judging. End with 今日は話せて楽しかったです (Kyō wa hanasete tanoshikatta desu)—‘I enjoyed talking today’—to make a future conversation easy.
